It was idealized by Charles III as a recollection of his experience as the King of Naples. Since 1785 it was used on the ships.
The two colours recalled the emblems of the Kingdom of Castile, Aragon and Navarre. They had been chosen because they were visible during the sailing.
The symbol of this flag, which represents the 4 kingdoms which in the XV century were brought together to form the real Spain, derive from the emblems of the Kingdom of Castile (a yellow castle on a red field), of León (the lion), of Aragon (from the popular Senyera) and of Navarre (from the combined chains).
On the background of the emblem appears also the Kingdom of Granada, with the pomegranate. At the core f the 4 emblems there is the Real House of the Borbons with the fleur de lys and the two lateral columns of the shield, with the writing “plus ultra” which substitutes the old “non plus ultra” (It was believed that Spain was the last country in west). They symbolized the discovers and the spanish conquests in America.
