There is not a story of apparitions or miracles, but simply a representation of Mary Mother of Jesus, who has her dead son in her arms.
The most popular image is the “Pietà” of Michelangelo, that he sculpted between 1498 and 1499 in the Carrara’s marble, for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères commission.
Some critics pointed out the young aspect of the Virgin compared with Christ. Michelangelo told that “Chastity, Sanctity and Uncorruption preserve the youth”.
The opionion of Vasari about those critiques was beautiful and perfectly interpreted. He wrote that the critics did not know that the virgin people maintained the air of their face without any marks.
Michelangelo interpreted the representation not to illustrate the Christ’s death, but he was principally interested in the symbolic aspect.
